RALEIGH -- Wake Technical Community College students, staff and faculty will be able to ride for free on a new Capital Area Transit bus service from downtown Raleigh to the school's main campus, a new service they can take advantage of when classes resume on Monday.

A new agreement between the college and the city provides a CAT regional express route from Moore Square to the Fayetteville Road campus that will give a free ride to Wake Tech students, staff and faculty, according to a college news release. The new service replaces a run previously made by Southern Coach.

The regional express route will run hourly between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. every day the college is in session. It will include a stop at a park-and-ride lot in Garner. The Raleigh City Council approved the arrangement in November.

CAT also serves other Wake Tech locations on its normal routes, including the Northern Wake Campus on Louisburg Road (U.S. 401 North), the Health Sciences Campus on Holston Avenue, and the Adult Education Center on Capital Boulevard.

The new agreement enables riders to connect through Moore Square to ride the bus to any of those locations and offers possibilities for a more comprehensive transit program for Wake Tech students. About 10,000 students currently attend classes on the main campus.
