Amtrak celebrates National Train Day

RALEIGH - North Carolina's Amtrak will celebrate National Train Day today by holding open houses at train stations across Eastern North Carolina.

Prospective passengers can visit their nearest train station for schedule and trip planning information to find out where their North Carolina trains can take them. Staff will be on hand for questions.

May 10 was chosen as National Train Day to recognize the anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, connecting the East and West coasts by rail. Complete rail schedules and train information for Amtrak's North Carolina trains is available at bytrain.org or by calling (800) 872-7245.

Triangle station locations and open house times are 320 W. Cabarrus St. in Raleigh, 6 a.m.-10 p.m., 834-2098; 400 W. Chapel Hill St. in Durham, 7 a.m.-9 p.m., 956-7927; and 500 E. Railroad St. in Selma, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 965-6971.
