CARY - The town no longer needs its water tower on Kildaire Farm Road, but the communications companies that use it for their antennae still do.

So one of them, Sprint Nextel, has offered to replace the tower with a tall piece of public art that would function as a communications tower. Sprint Nextel has offered to donate the tower to the town in exchange for free use of it for a term yet to be determined.

The town would own and control the site and the tower, and Sprint Nextel would eventually begin paying the prevailing rental rate for its antennae.

This week, the town held an open house on the tower, expecting to hear what people thought about its appearance. Instead, several residents said that artwork or not, they don't want a cell tower in their backyard because of concerns about radiation. Some said they worry about its proximity to Cary Elementary School.
