RALEIGH — Wake County school officials said today they intend to appeal the Raleigh Planning Commission's decision to not allow Broughton High School to turn the front lawn into a parking lot.
The Planning Commission voted 6-3 on Tuesday against the request, siding with Broughton alumni who said the parking lot would harm the historic character of the 79-year-old school. The appeal will be heard by the Raleigh City Council on Tuesday.
Mike Burriss, the Wake school system's assistant superintendent for facilities, said they decided to appeal at the urging of Broughton school officials. School officials have argued that the parking lot is needed to provide more spaces and to improve the traffic flow around the school.
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker has said it's likely that the City Council will refer the issue to a committee before making a decision. He is also seeking legal advice on whether he needs to recuse himself from the issue because he's married to school board member Anne McLaurin.
The City Council will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers, 222 W. Hargett Street.
