RALEIGH -- Wake County will have a new chief District Court judge starting Thursday.

Robert Rader, who has been a District Court judge since 1994, will succeed the retiring Chief District Court Judge Joyce "Joy" Hamilton.

N.C. Supreme Court Justice Sarah Parker today announced the appointment of Rader to succeed Hamilton, who has been the chief judge for seven years.

The chief District Court judge handles assignments for other Wake District Court judges.

Rader initially was appointed to the bench by former Gov. Jim Hunt, for whom Rader worked after graduating from N.C. State University in 1978. Rader won elections in 1996, 2000, and 2004.

Hamilton's last day on the bench is Wednesday. She was first elected in 1986, when she became the first woman elected to serve as a judge in Wake County.
