An estimated 50,000 gallons of sewage spewed into Utley Creek in Holly Springs on Friday after severe weather affected operations at the Utley Creek Water Reclamation Facility, the town reported Saturday.
Pump controls were lost due to a power outage caused by the storms, the town said in a news release. Operations are now back to normal.
Utley Creek is part of the Cape Fear River Basin. The town said it notified the Division of Water Resources and that the spill is under review.
People seeking more information on the spill are asked to call Holly Springs water quality director Seann Byrd at 919-577-1090, or chief operator Terry Foster at 919-567-4738.
