MAJOR LEAGUER?
Are you a budding major leaguer? Wonder how you stack up against other high school players?
A Path to the Pros, a showcase sponsored by MVP Baseball, is a free indoor event open to the public and aimed at selecting the nation's top high school players for competitive and scouted tournaments nationwide.
Players and their parents can attend a presentation on college recruiting followed by a pro-style workout designed to gauge athletes' talent and potential. Individual evaluations will be posted on on MVP Baseball's Web site.
The Dec. 30 showcase starts at 12:30 p.m. at Athletics Performance Center at 2400 Sumner Blvd. To register, visit

BLACK AND WHITE NEW YEAR'S EVE BALL
No New Year's Eve plans? Then put your dancin' shoes on -- and a black and white outfit, casual or classy -- and get your rumba to the Carolina Dance Club's Black and White Ball.
The dance promises to be loads of fun, as the 300 attendees from last year can attest, and it benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of North Carolina.
The fun starts at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 at Temple Beth Or at 5315 Creedmoor Road. Swing lessons begin at 7:30 and then the floor will be open for general merriment and mayhem. A midnight nonalcoholic toast and 12:45 a.m. last dance follows. Raffles and door prizes will be given out. No partner is necessary.
A wide selection of swing, ballroom and Latin dance music will be mixed throughout the evening with some holiday favorites and requests.
Today is the deadline to buy discounted tickets: $12 for Carolina Dance Club members; $15 for others. After Dec. 21 and at door the tickets will be $16 for the public.
Tickets include the swing lesson, noisemakers, desserts, Starbucks coffee and the midnight toast. Call 888-217-9464 or go to
www.musicanddance.com for tickets.
