As many of you who read the fine print noticed, last week's Neat Feat feature was the last. That series, which began in March, put a monthly spotlight on the achievements of area students, educators and parents.
In its place, we will shortly be starting a series about Millbrook High School. Dana King, the new principal, has agreed to let us tag along during her first year.
It needs to be said at the outset that Millbrook is no decaying inner city school, and Dana King is no Joe Clark, patrolling unruly halls with baseball bat. Millbrook is not in any serious sense troubled. In terms of test scores and other academic measures, it outpaces many high schools in North Carolina and in the Triangle.
But it's not enough for King, as well as for many parents and faculty, that Millbrook simply not be as bad as it could be; they want the school to reach its full potential. King and others feel Millbrook had a better reputation in the past than it does today, and they are determined to change that. Millbrook has struggled with the same problems as many other so-called "rim" schools -- close enough to low-income neighborhoods to be assigned many students from those neighborhoods, yet not close enough to be declared a magnet school, which would allow them to pick and choose their students.
It hasn't helped that the school has suffered a series of unfortunate incidents in recent years that earned it unwanted publicity and attention.
Our series will be about education -- about the challenges facing any new principal -- but it will also detail a very human struggle to accomplish something important. It promises to be fascinating reading.

It's time once again for our popular "My North Raleigh" photo feature. We do this every year in October to mark the anniversary of the North Raleigh News (this will be our fourth.) As always, we are asking area residents to send us photos that represent "your" North Raleigh -- people, places and events important to you.
The deadline is Sept. 26.
Send digital photos to
dholly@newsobserver.com or mail negatives to: My North Raleigh, North Raleigh News, P.O. Box 196, Raleigh, NC 27602. Either color or black and white images are fine. We will not be able to return negatives.
Please include a short note about why the image represents North Raleigh to you, as well as a face shot of yourself. Finally, include your phone number in case we have questions.
We will publish the best photos in October, and others will appear on our Web site.
