Dan Holly, Staff Writer
I thank those of you who have responded (so far) to my request last week for help in deciding how to improve the North Raleigh News.
For those who didn't read the column, I said that we wanted your input on changes we may make in 2005 as part of our ongoing efforts to serve our readers. I asked what features you like (e.g., "Your 15 Minutes," "Bits & Pieces" or "Police Report"). I asked which columns you like and don't like, and I even asked how useful you find the little items at the top of the page (e.g., "Stop & Go.")
We don't
have to change anything -- which would be fine with one reader, who wrote: "I don't think you really need to change a thing...I seem to notice that when The News & Observer changes something in the paper, it always seems to be worse afterward."
On the other hand, one caller wants us to change a lot: "I see no reason at all for a North Raleigh News section," she said. "What is North Raleigh anyway? Could it not all be in other sections of the paper?"
Well, no. A lot of news and information we give you here -- neighborhood news, news about individual schools, etc. -- is not in other parts of the paper.
So, with all due respect to that caller, we're not going away. And we're not going to make changes just to make changes. But why not be the best we can be?
So I welcome hearing from anyone who has not yet weighed in. My contact information is at the bottom of this column.
And while I'm asking for input, I neglected last week to ask about the charters and home sales that we run in the back of the section. Is there anyone out there reading those?
In case you're wondering, though: Sorry to say, but we cannot convert excise tax stamp amounts to actual home sale prices. That would be make the information more user-friendly, but it's a time-consuming task that we do not have the resources to undertake.
