If you watched the Democratic National Convention on TV, you're probably feeling the urge to go out and do something good. I'm sure the upcoming Republican National Convention will engender the same feelings.
Political conventions, with their lofty rhetoric, tend to inspire the best in us. How long that inspiration lasts is another matter, but while it's there, you may want to do something about it. I have a couple of ideas for you.
Last year, I took my kids to Kidsfest, a day-long festival at Spring Forest Road Park. We all had a great time, and as the day went on, I began to notice how many friendly, helpful volunteers there were at the festival.
The city of Raleigh's Recreation Department is looking for volunteers. What could be a better use of your time than helping a child have a fun day?
The event, sponsored by the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department, is Saturday, Sept. 25 (rain date on Sunday, Sept. 26) from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at 4203 Spring Forest Road.
The event includes animal exhibits, booths where you can make art, hayrides, games, pony rides, a moon bounce and a giant inflatable slide.
Lynn Warren, assistant recreation superintendent for Raleigh, said volunteers are needed to take tickets, fill water coolers, supervise rides, etc.

chris.frelke@ci.raleigh.nc.us.For the adults, the Wakefield Women's Club is holding its "2004-2005 New Membership Kick-Off Luncheon" Sept. 8 at the Tournament Players Club.
The event includes a "Fall Fashion Show" that benefits the Interact Women's Shelter. It's one of the best uses of $20 ($16 for members) I can think of.
Call Dee Cecchetti, 554-1872, for reservations and information. The deadline for luncheon reservations is Sept. 3.
