Dan Holly, Staff Writer
Today, we complete our front-to-back transformation. Before we get to today's changes, though, let me introduce our next (and last) new columnist: Elaine Klonicki.
Klonicki, 47, is a freelance writer who has written two books: "Thinking About Therapy? What to Expect from 'The Talking Cure,' " and "Captured Words."
She was born and raised outside Philadelphia but has lived in Raleigh since 1975. Her husband, Gary, works for SAS Institute. They have two children, Doug, 28, and Jenny, 16.
Most of the changes are on what used to be called The Public Square page (page 9N this week). Starting today, the page has a new name: For the Record. The change underscores what the page is all about: We scour public records to find information you might want to know.
More than the name is new:
* The police report is a lot bigger. Why? Most readers like the police report, but some gave us the kind of feedback that Kathy Casey did: "We know of several things that have gone on that were not mentioned."
We still won't have room for everything, of course, but we will have more room to tell you about crime in your community.
* To show crime trends, at the top of the page we'll be running weekly stats for major crimes in North Raleigh police districts. (This replaces Public Calendar, which had info available elsewhere in the section.)
* The restaurant inspection reports have moved across the page but they haven't changed; Note, however, that we now include the link to the Wake County's Web site -- if your favorite eatery is not listed in any week, you can look it up.
* Home Sales will move around instead of being anchored to that page (they're on 5N today), and they may not run every week. But they'll be worth finding. Instead of listing excise tax amounts and letting you figure out the sales price, we'll do the math for you. As reader George Hardy said: "Who wants to sit there with a calculator in their lap?" Plus, we now sort them by ZIP code.
One more change: We have a new feature, "Who wants to be a photographer?" See the feature (on page 8N today) for more information.
