We're cleaning the fridge

Do you read the little feature at the top of page 3N called "Stop & Go?" Do you like it? If you don't, do you have any ideas for how that space can be better used?

This is the type of feedback we're seeking as we prepare for a top-to-bottom review of the North Raleigh News section.

We're not thinking of a major overhaul, just some fine tuning around the edges.

Think of the newspaper as a refrigerator. You certainly intend to eat everything you put in there. But it may not taste as good the second time, or third.

Occasionally, you have to go into the fridge and open up all the containers and take a whiff.

Just like it takes some thought deciding which leftovers to keep and which ones to throw out (at least for men), deciding what line-up of features is best for this section is not a snap decision.

Take Stop & Go, for instance. This feature lists road work around northern Wake. The idea is that you can find out where the traffic problems are and find an alternate route.

Lately, though, the problem spots have tended to be the same every week. There are only so many big road projects going on around town -- right now, at least.

When the weather heats up, so does road construction. When that happens, the feature should be more useful to readers -- I think. We're not sure which features readers like and dislike.

In addition to Stop & Go, I'd like to know what you think of "In the Shopping Centers" (see the top of 4N today), "Parent to Parent" (top of 7N) and "Adopt a Friend" (top of 6N).

While you're at it, tell me what you think of "What's Up With That?" (on this page today), "Say What?" (monthly man-on-the-street interviews, first Friday of each month) and "Your 15 Minutes" (a profile of a local person, the third Friday.)
