After a peppering of soft openings, an eclectic tenant mix and lots and lots of mentions in this column, The Factory -- come on, say it with me, the former Athey street sweeper plant off of U.S. 1 in Wake Forest -- is holding its grand opening at the end of the month.

On Saturday May 21, Jeff Ammons' playground will kick off the day with a 5K run at 8:30 a.m. The rest of the day will be filled with kid-friendly events.

It'll also be a chance to check out the mostly open retail stores, where you can get a custom set of golf clubs or fancy pictures of your kids.

For more information, visit The Factory's Web site at: www.eatshopplay.com.

Calling out to all area Vinyl Viceroys and Breakbeat Barons: Guitar Center on Capital Boulevard will be holding the Raleigh division of the chain's Spinoff '05.

The hip-hop D.J. contest will pit contestants in turntable battles to send the best spinners to the national competition.

Turntables are provided; just bring needles and records. Visit www.guitarcenter.com/spinoff.
