Book shop relocates

A 50-year-old book store is taking a two-block jaunt south on Old Wake Forest Road.

Stevens Book Shop, previously at the intersection of Old Wake Forest Road and Capital Boulevard, opened Monday in the old SRI Shoe Warehouse building at 6700 Old Wake Forest Road.

Opened in 1955 by Dick Stevens, the shop has weathered competition from big-box retailers.

Joining Stevens in the old SRI space is his daughter Pam's art gallery and framing business. Stevens Gallery & Framing and Stevens Book Shop will be at the location for at least two years.

The store was formerly in downtown Raleigh at the current Father & Son Antiques location.

If you think your daughter is obsessed with princesses, monstrous creatures with hearts of gold or anthropomorphic tea pots, then -- quick!-- hide the paper.

North Carolina Theatre and North Hills are hosting part of the cast from the regional production of the Disney musical "Beauty and the Beast" for tea. They'll be in the commons of the shopping center at the intersection of Lassiter Mill and Six Forks Road on Saturday.

Tea with Belle starts at 10:30 a.m. and will feature performances by Belle, Gaston and other members of the cast, which could include talking candle sticks, butter dishes or dancing flatware.

The promotion is for the April 29 opening of the show at the BTI Center.

And finally, due to a myopic miscalculation, I reported in this column last week that Champa Thai & Sushi Restaurant at Brier Creek Commons was not yet open. The restaurant opened in December 2003.

Champa Thai & Sushi serves a variety of Thai food and sushi starting at about $8 a plate.

Brier Creek Commons is at Brier Creek Parkway and U.S. 70.

Champa Thai's Web site is: www.champathaiandsushi.com.
