Printing made cheaper

Those who found new printers under their Christmas trees might not need ink right now. But by the time next year's Christmas letters are printed, the toner may need to be refilled. Enter Rapid Refill Ink.

Located in Alexander Place Promenade at the intersection of Brier Creek Parkway and U.S. 70, the ink jet and toner refill store can put life back into old printer cartridges, a cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative than shelling out bucks for whole new cartridges.

The local franchise is opening a second location in February at the still-under-construction Plantation Point shopping center near Triangle Town Center.

For more information, visit: www.rapidrefillink.com.

Alexander Place Promenade is off the intersection of Brier Creek Parkway and U.S. 70, just North of Interstate 540.

For those crying for an opportunity to have your doughnuts taste like a peanut butter cup, your wails have been answered.

Last week, Brian and Janet Skiscim opened the first Raleigh franchise of The Fractured Prune Donut Shoppe.

The Prune offers traditional bagel, coffee and breakfast sandwich fare, but the speciality of the house is custom doughnuts.

Customers order doughnuts with whatever toppings they choose. The doughnuts are then freshly made, glazed and topped with goodies such as peanut butter, chocolate chips or cookie crumbs.

The sky's the limit on potential combinations, but for new customers a menu can help guide the way.

The Prune was started as a mom-and-pop doughnut outfit in Ocean City, Md., in the 1970s. It's now franchised and in six states and D.C.

The Raleigh location is in the second phase of Alexander Place Promenade, close to the Carolina Ale House off of U.S. 70 at Brier Creek Parkway.

Congratulations go out to Danny Blackmon of Zebulon.

He picked out the correct key from a Christmas stocking to win the Crabtree Valley Mall's month-long holiday car contest.

Blackmon, who works at Central Prison, won the 2006 Saturn Vue last Friday. Other finalists received gift cards to the mall and Carolina Hurricanes tickets.

"Thank God!" he said, when the sport utility vehicle cranked.

"I'm going to give it to my wife for Christmas."
