When a routine physical exam three years ago revealed a mild case of scoliosis, Christine Baker, 14, never dreamed that six months later she'd be facing surgery that could jeopardize her goal to be a high-flying cheerleader.

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. Curvatures beyond 20 degrees require medical attention. Baker's scoliosis was 48 degrees when a back-straightening operation was prescribed.

She walked out of the hospital within five days of surgery and was turning cartwheels after seven months.

Today, the North Raleigh resident is one of just four freshmen on Broughton High School's 23-member varsity cheerleading squad.

As a flyer, Baker completes difficult twisting and tumbling moves as teammates toss her into the air.

"It was my dream, and I worked as hard as I could," she said.

Broughton coach Marge Elvers, an English teacher at Daniels Middle School, recognized Baker's potential last year as a student.

"Christine demonstrated an impeccable academic work ethic in class. She is unstoppable." Elvers said.

Baker wants to be an inspiration for other young athletes.

"Even when it gets hard, just work harder," she said.
