If you are at the Brier Creek Community Center on a Tuesday night, watch out for the Killa Maters -- on the dodgeball court.

The Killa Maters are halfway through a decent season, with seven wins so far. Their only loss is under protest due to a scorecard mix-up.

Team captain and original Mater Wayne Howard, 30, embarked on his dodgeball adventures when his Cary apartment complex organized a kids' program.

When Raleigh Parks and Recreation created two dodgeball leagues, the Killa Maters joined up. They eventually morphed into a team of friends, co-workers, girlfriends and anyone else who wants to play so they can maintain a roster of 12.

"Whenever we get down to eight players, we just scrounge up more," Howard said.

In dodgeball, six players from each team face off with a row of balls separating them. At the sound of a referee's whistle, players race forward and grab balls. Then the fun begins.

They hurl the balls back and forth, trying to hit opposing players, knocking them out of play.

"It's fun," Howard said. "This is one of the few games where you can hit someone with a ball and not get in trouble."

If you want to play, call Jackie Twisdale at 831-6836.
