A group of North Raleigh tennis pros have clinched a U.S. Tennis Association Eastern National championship.

Stephan Kadir, 26, of Indonesia; Teddi Doncheva, 26, of Bulgaria and Ganiyu Adelekan, 31, of Nigeria were on the eight-person team bringing home gold from Puerto Rico in mixed doubles. The three are teaching pros at Seven Oaks Swimming and Racquet Club.

The unnamed team had a 10.0 ranking, the highest under the USTA system. The tournament had round robin play with winners determined by points.

"It is unusual for three pros from the same club to play on the 10.0 level and to win a national championship," said Jack Blankenhorn, tennis director for the Creedmoor Road club.

Seven Oaks members have been cheering for their pros as they won league, state and sectional championships The club held fund-raising events to help pay for their trip to Puerto Rico.

Kadir was a national player in Indonesia and is here pursuing an MBA. Doncheva came here on a tennis scholarship at Campbell University. Adelekan played for the Nigerian Davis Cup and attended Shaw University.

Other team members were Richard McClenny and Ben Cooke of Durham, Cathy Lovett of Cary, and Cara White and Myrna Bawono of Raleigh.
