Steelers win with shutout

The Capital City Steelers have won another Pop Warner national title.

This time, it was the Junior Pee Wees who capped an undefeated season with a 21-0 shutout over the St. Phillips (Texas) Saints in Orlando on Sunday

Including other age groups, the Capital City Steelers have won three national championships in four years.

"We were blessed to have so many talented players this year," said head coach Mitchell Brown. "We kept everyone involved. There were no stars. Everyone was treated the same."

This is the first national championship for Brown, an interactive media account executive with The News & Observer.

Junior Pee Wee teams are made up of 35 boys from 9 to 11 years old. Keeping healthy, athletic boys focused for an entire season can be challenging, Brown admits.

"We have a good core group. They bonded outside of football and pushed each other on the field," he said.

Many members of the team have been in the Pop Warner program since they were 5-year-old Tiny Mite beginners.

There's no real secret to coaching champions, Brown said.

"You don't coach to win a championship," he said. "You coach to win one game at a time."
