Geoffrey Sanders logged a 15th place ranking in the 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., last week, and while he calls his brush with Olympic fame incredible, he's not letting up now.

"After the trials, I'll go to Knoxville, where I am coaching a summer league, then I'll come home to Raleigh for a couple of weeks, and then it's back to school," he said.

Sanders, 19, who swam with the New Wave Swim Team and Enloe High School, is a rising sophomore at the University of Tennessee.

"This was a different kind of meet," he said. "Just being able to sit in the stands and watch records being broken while also participating as an athlete was unforgettable."

Other North Raleigh athletes fared well in the trials.

Leesville High School Swim Coach Jason Miller swam to a 48th place finish with a personal best of 54.65 in the 100 butterfly. Miller's first 50-meter split was faster than world record holder Michael Phelps' initial 50 split, according to the Marlins of Raleigh Swim Team Web site.

Jessica Botzum, 22, of the YMCA of the Triangle Area (YOTA) Swim Team, tied for eighth in the 100 breaststroke and ranked 18th in 200 breaststroke.

Matt McGinnis, 22, of YOTA finished 16th in the 200 freestyle, 14th in the 100 freestyle, and 16th in the 50 freestyle. Eric McGinnis, 18, and Charlie Houchin, 20, of YOTA also competed.
