Bethany Benson remembers the early days of the North Raleigh Christian Academy's cheerleading program.

Just six years ago, there were 12 members. Today there are 37.

NRCA's squad finished second out of a field of 100 teams at the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders 2008 National Christian Cheerleading Champion-ships, which took place Jan. 4 and 5 in Orlando, Fla.

The squad also won first place for Best Choreography and Best Jumps and Tumbling.

Bethany, a 17-year-old senior and cheerleading captain, received a special honor: the FCC National Scholar Award, recognizing cheerleading skills, academics and participation in activities outside of school.

This fall, she will attend Grace College in Indiana, but may not continue cheering. For one thing, at 5 feet 9 inches, she is tall for the sport.

"I'm still trying to figure that out," she said.

The NRCA cheerleaders will compete again Saturday at the Champion Cheer Gym Classic at Garner High School. The championship starts at 10 a.m.

"This is a good opportunity to work with the girls and influence their lives," said NRCA head coach Pam Pusateri. "I am teaching them assertiveness and leadership, and how to be responsible, dedicated, and good teammates."
