The Leesville Road High School girls relay swim team has smashed two records and has a chance to set more records this weekend at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A swimming championships at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Abby Vance, 16, Erin Burke, 16, Allison Hendren, 16, and Katie Godown, 18, won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays to clinch the Cap 7 Conference Championship, setting a conference record of 1:39.46 in the 200 relay and 3:34.17 in the 400 relay.

They followed up with stellar performances at the Eastern Regionals Feb. 1, again winning both events, and setting regional records of 1:40.07 in the 200 relay and 3:36.99 in the 400 relay.

All four are strong swimmers as individuals, according to coach Jason Miller.

"You put four girls like that together, and you have one of the top relay teams in the state," he said.

Hendren, a two-time National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-American, enjoys being part of a team.

"It's really fun to bring everyone's talent to a relay, and you end up setting records," Hendren said.

Outside of school, the swimmers compete against each other in year-round programs.

Vance and Hendren swim with New Wave, and Burke and Godown swim with the YMCA of the Triangle.

"It's weird," Hendren said. "We're definitely rivals on our year-round teams, but we're also friends, and that makes us more determined to win when we're together."
