Saturday will be a Day of Champions at Ravenscroft High School when it hosts the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship basketball finals for all three divisions, 1A, 2A and 3A.

The Ravenscroft boys and girls teams are seeded fourth in the 3A Division and are enjoying their best season in recent years, according to athletic director Ned Gonet.

"Both teams are playing well," he said. Boys and girls teams are 23-6.

Juniors Ryan Kelly, 16, and Lindsay Cowher, 17, and senior Dominic Parker, 18, hit important milestones this season when each scored a high school career 1,000th point. Cowher, in her second year playing for the Ravens, hit this benchmark with her 26th point in Ravenscroft's victory over St. Mary's on Feb. 14.

Cowher, who has been playing basketball since the third grade, is a 6-foot-1 forward.

"I love basketball. I love everything about it," Cowher said. "My two sisters played with passion and really inspired me."

Cowher's love of sports and competition are in her blood. Her mother, Kaye, played college basketball at Peace and N.C. State and with the former Women's Professional Basketball League and went on to a career in coaching. Her father, Bill, is former head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I got my winning attitude from both my parents," Cowher said.

She also hopes to follow in her parents' footsteps and coach a team of her own someday.
