How well do you know the community where you live? Not well enough?

That's why we're presenting these "community snapshots." (This is the third in a series.)

They are based on the Community Inventory Report, a document compiled by city planners as part of an effort to update the city's Comprehensive Plan. The report has extensive demographic data on neighborhoods throughout the city. The snapshots are broken down by planning district, Today we look at the Northwest planning district.

OVERVIEW

The Northwest planning district is home to Crabtree Valley Mall, Rex Hospital and the N.C. State Museum of Art. With Glenwood Avenue running diagonally through its center, the district is also home to a small amount of office buildings and retail.

Glenwood Avenue provides the district with access to Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Research Triangle Park. Other major arteries within the district are Creedmoor, Lynn and Edwards Mill roads.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Northwest district has the highest percentage of apartment and condominiums among Raleigh's 10 planning districts at 8.7 percent. It also has the smallest percentage of open space of any district at just 3 percent, although the district is adjacent to Umstead State Park.
