I would like to see an update on commercial development in the Wakefield area, especially the new regional library, and to find out what is happening at the corner of New Falls of Neuse and Capital Boulevard.-- Michele WallaceQ.If you're eastbound on New Falls of Neuse at the U.S. 1 intersection, there's just one left turn lane, which is almost always so backed up it takes a couple of light changes to get through it. Any plans to add another? It's sorely needed.-- Mark CantrellA. Both of these questions involve the intersection of New Falls of Neuse and US 1. The common theme is how the Wakefield area is growing.Good news for the second reader - a second left turn lane is going to be added on New Falls for traffic heading north on U.S. 1."We have thought about it and had recommended it to do," said Steve Johnson, Division Traffic Engineer for the Department of Transportation, "But now there's a facility...that will be required to construct a new left turn lane [at that intersection.]"The facility being built on the northwest corner of that intersection (what the first reader wondered about) is a Rex Wellness Center and will include some medical facilities. An update on the new regional library: Plans for the Northeast Regional Library were approved by the Board of Commissioners on Feb. 18, according to Frank Cope, Community Services Director of Wake County. The library is also being built in that area: It will sit on a bluff near a stream northwest of the intersection of New Falls of Neuse Road and Capital Boulevard.Construction on the 22,220 square foot facility will start in fall of 2008, Cope estimates, and be completed by winter of 2010.Mark Forestieri, Project Manager for Wake County, said the building will have some unique characteristics. The library will sit atop a hill with a creek in the wooded area below. The design of the building is meant to loosely mimic the bend in the creek.Additionally, the building will contain clerestory light - windows that allow daylight to flood into the building from above; It will limit impervious surfaces to minimize run off on the steep hill; and the building will be as energy efficient as money allows.
