Q.Can you find out about the progress on the new park at the end of Old 98? Thanks.-- Michele WallaceA. The park at the end of Old 98 is called Forest Ridge Park. It will be west of the Wakefield area off Falls of Neuse Road.Dick Bailey, Design Development Administrator for the Division of Parks and Recreation explained that the 586-acre property will be used for a variety of recreational and educational activities, as well as for the city's outdoor adventure programs. The land is actually owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and is currently leased to and managed by the NC Wildlife Federation. The Corps, the Wildlife Federation and the city are currently reviewing the exact details of the future leasing agreement. The Town of Wake Forest also made a pass at developing the land about 20 years ago, according to Town Planner Chip Russell. The park would have then been called "Peninsula Park" because of the large peninsula that juts out into Falls Lake.Bailey said the development of the park "will focus on embracing the potential of the site while being sensitive to and preserving existing natural and cultural resources," quoting from the park's mission statement.Bailey estimated that the park design will be finished by the end of this year, and that the construction will be finished by the end of next year. The master plan includes areas for a canoe/kayak launch, a group camping area with an overnight lodge, an adventure education and retreat center, an amphitheater, a ropes course, a disc golf course, playground and picnic areas and hiking and mountain biking trails, Bailey said. The master plan is too big and complicated to reprint in this space, but you can see the entire layout -- plus a 75-page report on the park -- on the city's Web site, www.raleighnc.gov.
