Q. I just wanted to see what you could find out about the intersection of Creedmoor Road and Norwood Road.
Specifically, why there is no left-turn lane to go south on Creedmoor from Norwood? Traffic backs up past the fire station in the mornings while waiting for people to turn left. Drivers coming in the opposite direction do have a left-turn lane.
There is plenty of space there, so the road would not have to be widened, just new lanes painted. I believe the majority of drivers are turning left to head to I-540, so those of us going straight on Norwood usually end up cycling through two or three lights before we can get through the intersection.
Any good reason for this oversight?
Thanks,
Pam Rocque
A. According to Steve Abbott, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, there were previously no plans for a left-turn lane on Norwood Road heading south onto Creedmoor because the traffic volume didn't warrant it.
However, things are about to change. Groundbreaking has already begun on a new CVS pharmacy located on the northeast corner of the intersection. As part of the project, CVS will be required by the DOT to add a turning lane to the intersection.
As one would approach the intersection from the fire station (westbound), the store will have a driveway or turning lane (plans aren't yet finalized) near the intersection and off to the right going into the parking lot. The intersection itself will have one lane for left turns and one lane for traffic going straight and or making right turns. The DOT hopes this will help ease congestion at the intersection.
"Hopefully, it will lessen the bottleneck," Abbott said.
In addition to the CVS store potentially adding traffic to the intersection, Abbott says the volume of traffic in that area is likely to keep increasing. Both of those were good reasons to require the turning lane be added.
He estimates the road portion of the project will begin in the coming months.
