What's up with that?

Q. I was wondering if you knew who to call to see about getting a left arrow turn light at the intersection of Six Forks Road and Forum Drive? Since Forum Drive has opened from Six Forks Road to Lead Mine Road, the traffic at 5 p.m. is awful. It takes at least 2 to 3 light cycles to turn left onto Six Forks Road because of the traffic cutting through from Strickland Road [on Colonnade Center Drive] to cross Six Forks.

I called the traffic department, but don't think that did any good.

This is becoming a dangerous intersection. Because it takes so long to turn left onto Six Forks Road going toward I-540, people are going straight across Six Forks Road and doing a U-turn, then coming back towards Six Forks Road and making a right turn.

Additionally, the traffic on Forum Drive between Lead Mine and Six Forks is further exacerbated by people running the stop sign on Old Lead Mine Road to turn right onto Forum Drive going towards Six Forks.

I work at Eaton, which is the building right on the corner, and getting out of the parking deck at 5 p.m. is a nightmare! I sincerely believe a left turn signal on both sides of Forum Drive will make the traffic flow a lot smoother.

Thank you for your time and assistance!

A.You were on the right track when you tried to call traffic officials, but apparently you called the wrong office.

The Raleigh Public Works Department is the agency that handles traffic signals. Jeremy Potter, a signal systems analyst with that department said he had not received any complaints about that intersection.

(We passed yours along, but you might want to follow up -- you can reach Potter at 890-3430.)

The area you complain about is a fast-growing part of town, and likely conditions will only get worse.

When the department receives complaints, it begins a study to determine what changes need to be made.

"There's not any kind of study [of that intersection] going on right now," Potter said.

The city can make adjustments to the timing, if need be, to allow more time for left turns, he said. Analysts can also consider adding left-turn arrows to the traffic signals on Forum Drive and Colonnade Center Drive, Potter added. (Currently, those streets have left-turn lanes but no left-turn arrows.)

The decision on left-turn arrows is not arbitrary; the factors are all laid out in a document entitled the Traffic Control Devices handbook. The factors include the amount of traffic that comes through an intersection, delaying left turns, and the number of left-turn crashes that have occurred at the intersection over the previous year or two, Potter said.

We hope that helps. If you -- or other readers -- have concerns about any other traffic signals, you can call 890-3430 if the signal is inside Raleigh city limits, and 560-6856 if the area is outside city limits.
