Freshman year can be an exciting, yet scary, time for students -- and parents. To help ease some of those concerns, several northern Wake schools are hosting freshman-orientation camps.

The camps, which last one or two days, help familiarize freshman with high school rules, teach them about clubs and sports, and provide information about the guidance department.

The camps will be held:

* July 27 or Aug. 3 at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School at 420 W. Stadium Drive (554-8611);

* July 31 and Aug. 1, or Aug. 2 and 3 at Sanderson High School at 5500 Dixon Drive(881-4800);

* Aug. 9 or Aug. 10 at Wakefield High School at 2200 Wakefield Pines Drive (562-3600); and

* Aug. 23 at Leesville Road High School, 8409 Leesville Road (870-4250).

Schering-Plough, a science-based health care company, is sponsoring the "Will to Win" Asthma Scholarship.

The scholarship is open to 2006 graduates who have asthma.

The company will award $50,000 in scholarship grants for students in five categories: performing arts, visual arts, community service, athletics and student government.

Applicants must have at least a 3.5 grade-point-average and prove they have been accepted to a U.S. college.

The deadline is Oct. 13. Winners will be notified in January.
