Visit Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School at 1800 S. Main St. for the first Charity Laser Light Show and Dance-A-Thon at 7 p.m. June 2.

Nick Comis, a professional illusionist, and Sights & Sounds Inc. will put on two illusion shows. The shows will include laser and strobe lights.

After the family-friendly shows, Sights & Sounds will keep the lasers going as students participate in the school's Dance-A-Thon to raise money for the Duke Children's Miracle Network. Students must raise at least $10 to participate in the Dance-A-Thon.

The laser shows is free, but donations are welcome.

Lynn Road Elementary School at 1601 Lynn Road is hosting a kindergarten Open House at 6 p.m. June 1 for families who will be starting school in the fall. Parents and students are invited to the school for a question and answer session and a chance to tour the school.

Millbrook High School was recently awarded a 10-inch Wildcat Mascot and $500 for the school's athletic department in a contest sponsored by Frito Lay and Wal-Mart. Students from the school designed a display that holds chips for the company.

Congratulations to John Mundell, a senior at Leesville Road High School, who won a $1,000 scholarship from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. John entered the association's nationwide Spanish essay-writing contest. He plans to study Spanish at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Wake County Public School System's Lifelong Learning Program is offering a month-long course to give students in third through seventh grades extra help in reading. Rapid Readers is an intervention course that will improve students' reading accuracy and speed by allowing them to practice letter sounds, phonics, word strategies, critical reasoning skills and more.

The course starts June 26 at Sanderson High School at 5500 Dixon Drive. The cost of the course is $799.

The program is also offering a School Success Strategies course that helps students improve study skills, including time management techniques, listening and note-taking, completing assignments, and class participation. The course also delves into helping kids with verbal presentations.

The course starts July 11 at Sanderson High School.

The cost is $399.
