Congratulations to Ravenscroft School students who brought home several journalism awards in the 2006 Scholastic Journalism Excellence competition. Ravenscroft was notified of the awards this month.

High school students won first and third place awards and claimed three honorable mentions.

First place awards went to senior Matt McConnell for sports and editorial columns and to sophomore Natasha Gangjee for editorial cartoons.

Third place for sports columns went to senior Philip Miller and sophomore Viraj Doshi. Pamela Tseng won third place for cartoons.

Junior Mary Fletcher King won an honorable mention for news articles, senior Wes Proctor was noted for editorial writing and an honorable mention went to sophomore Beau Walker for a feature article.

Ravencroft's student newspaper "The Nevermore" received third place for overall editorial content and honorable mentions for overall newspaper and for newspaper design.

The North Carolina Scholastic Media Association is a statewide organization that promotes excellence in scholastic journalism, according to a news release about the event. The association is part of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Wakefield High School at 2200 Wakefield Pines Drive is hosting its Cultural Arts Festival from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The festival is held for parents and PTA members to get to know artists who participate in the Artists in Schools program. The program brings professional artists into classrooms for performances, workshops and residencies.

More than 150 artists participate in the program.
