Congratulations to Wakefield High School's student newspaper "The Wakefield Howler" for claiming several awards in the 2007 N.C. Press Club High School Communications Contest. Awards were given to students based on writing, photography and graphic abilities.

* Senior Lily Shabani won first place in the news category for her report on the minimum wage.

* Howler staff claimed first place in the editorial category for work on "Abstinence Ed Fails to Educate."

* Senior Brittany Peterson won first place for her sports photo of the school's swim team and an honorable mention for a wrestling photo.

* Senior Kaitlin McKeown won first place for her feature photo of the school's 5K race and an honorable mention for a photo with a professional juggler.

* Senior Daniela Nogueira earned an honorable mention in the single page layout category.

* Ninth-grader Taylor Cashdan earned an honorable mention in the graphics category.

East Millbrook Middle School at 3801 Spring Forest Road is hosting the Capitol City Stepshow: Year-End StompFest at 4 p.m. June 2.

Step teams from Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Rocky Mount and Henderson will compete.

Tickets are $7 in advance; $10 day of the show.

Congratulations to students of Raleigh Latin School who recently picked up accolades from the National Latin Exam Organization. Eleven middle school students received awards and 20 high school students received recognition.

Three middle school students earned perfect scores: seventh-graders Brittany Besser and Dean Adema and eighth-grader Ernst Casimir.
