Reader's Digest recently awarded $100,000 to the National Hospice Foundation to honor a group founded by 2003 Ravenscroft graduate David Fajgenbaum. Fajgenbaum started the National Students of Ailing Mothers and Fathers Support Network after losing his mom to cancer in 2004. The organization, which provides support to students who have lost a parent or are dealing with a sick parent, has gained lots of recognition.

Since its inception in 2005, the organization has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research. Fajgenbaum and the organization's efforts were featured on several million Doritos bags last year.

The latest nod from Reader's Digest is part of the magazine's "Make It Matter" program, which is donating $1 million to nonprofit organizations, according to a news release. The grants are inspired by individuals who are taking action and giving back to their communities, the release states. Fagjenbaum is featured in the May issue of Reader's Digest, which is currently on newsstands.

If you attend the soccer game Monday evening between Leesville and Broughton high schools, you might want to bring along a few nonperishable food items or personal hygiene items for a good cause.

The Leesville varsity soccer team is hosting a food drive during the game to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina. Barrels will be set up at the entrance to collect the donated items.

FYI: There is still an admissions fee to see the game.

Leesville is located at 8409 Leesville Road. Call 870-4250 for more information.
