The Wake County school board honored 22 students this month with Spotlight on Students awards. Among them were five from northern Wake schools.

The school district honors one student each year at each school for outstanding achievements and accomplishments.

The elementary school winners from northern Wake in this round are Guadalupe Montes Bermudez, 13, a fifth-grader at Douglas; Lindsay Stanley, 10, a fourth-grader at Leesville Road; Martha Olmos, 12, a fifth-grader at North Forest Pines; and Zoe Luglan, 9, a third-grader at York.

There were no middle school winners from northern Wake schools but, among high schools, Bryson Hill, 17, at Millbrook was an award recipient.

Congratulations to several northern Wake students who have received a $1,000 scholarship from the Sam Walton Community Scholarship program.

The winners are: Meagan Matthews, Alyssa Montgomery and Jason McMahon of Leesville Road High School; Maureen Thomas of Millbrook High School; Jessie Breazeale and Elizabeth Stamp of Wake Forest-Rolesville High School and Melissa Irgens of Raleigh Christian Academy.

Named after Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, the scholarship program provides grads with a little extra money to pay for college expenses.
