Oprah Winfrey is calling on educators to apply for a new project, O Ambassador Clubs, a joint effort of Oprah's Angel Network and Free the Children, an organization that encourages children to volunteer. The mission of the clubs is to raise money to tackle global issues such as poverty, education and health. Specific fundraising and awareness activities will be assigned to clubs to adapt for their school audience. The clubs will run for the 2008-09 school year.

Educators who are selected will receive curriculum resources, activities and worksheets.

Congratulations to Nicole Lizann Santos, a senior at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, who recently received the North Carolina Textile Foundation Centennial Scholarship to study in a textile degree program at N.C. State.

Only 10 North Carolina students are awarded the scholarship, which is valued at about $48,000. Monica Matthai, a senior at Athens Drive High School was also a recipient.

As part of the scholarship, Nicole will have $7,500 in enrichment funds for educational and cultural activities beyond the classroom, such as study abroad, career exploration trips and attending leadership conferences.

Nicole participated in the summer Textile Exploration Program through the College of Textiles.

Nicole intends to study textile engineering.

Kathleen is one of 21 deserving high school seniors and post-secondary students that will have extra money to apply toward education at the university, community or technical college of their choice, according to a news release about the scholarship.

The scholarship award recognizes a student's high achievement in extracurricular activities as well as academic excellence.
