Student knows globes

Congratulations to Durant Road Middle School sixth-grade student Ahkil Acharya, who recently placed third in the state Geography Bee Competition.

Ahkil won Durant Road's contest, which allowed him to compete in the state competition.

"We are extremely proud," said Durant Road assistant principal Patti Clinton.

Clinton said Ahkil was the only sixth-grader to place. Ahkil competed against about 100 students from across the state in knowledge of geography.

Brier Creek Elementary School will be honored at the City of Raleigh's environmental stewardship awards ceremony at Marbles Museum on April 22.

The ceremony will recognize Wake County schools' Energy Savers Program for promoting energy education. Wake's EnergySavers program is on tap to receive the National Resource Conservation Award.

The ceremony was created to honor programs that involve students and staff in learning about energy and environmental conservation.

Through Wake's EnergySavers Program, schools have created drought SwatTeams that monitor water conservation at their schools.

There is also a program called "Kids Teaching Kids" that encourages students to teach their peers and communities about energy.

Broughton High School's Student Action for the Environment program will also be recognized.
