Bill Gates, Microsoft billionaire, is these days focused, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on global health care and other worthy causes literally the world over. Now Gates and some friends of great wealth have started the Breakthrough Energy Coalition to invest in new, cheaper forms of energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Gates intends for the effort to simply move ahead with research to find a way to curb carbon emissions and greenhouse gases to make the planet a safer place for generations to come. Gates said without private investment, “year after year the problem would get worse.” Considering the strides Gates has made with his foundation in improving health care, particularly for children, in countries around the globe, his commitment to slowing climate change is encouraging.
Now the task is for these investors is to put the money to work to make their point to policymakers that something can be done, and to marshal, even in a contentious political climate, leaders of Congress and those in other nations to recognize the importance of curbing dangerous carbon emissions by working together in both the private and public spheres.
