Under Governor Easley's Learn and Earn program, 60 designated high schools allow students to earn college credit and even an associate's degree over five years. An online component is available across the state, and tuition grants are given to reduce tuition costs. It's a worthy program, and now it has received some noteworthy support.

Harvard University has given Learn and Earn an award that includes a $100,000 grant. It comes as a recognition of the program's fresh approach under an Easley initiative to cut North Carolina's dropout rate and improve worker preparedness.

The Innovations in American Government Awards come out of the Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. There are six winners.

Even as the program has won this national honor, state officials recognize that it needs more participation, and they're moving to "market" it with more intensity, particularly the online aspect. It obviously can be of tremendous benefit in a state where students from rural and less-affluent areas often lack some academic opportunities and the money to have much choice when it comes to college. Learn and Earn offers them both.
