UNC students award first Eve Carson scholarship

Elinor Benami, a junior from Tennessee, has been named the first Eve Marie Carson Scholar at UNC Chapel Hill.

The scholarship will fund a summer experience after her junior year and financial aid for her senior year. The daughter of Mary and Moti Benami of Knoxville, Tenn., Benami graduated from Bearden High School in Knoxville in 2006.

Benami is double-majoring in international studies and economics in the College of Arts and Sciences. She plans a career in environmental consulting.

Triangle students among Morehead-Cain scholars

Twelve Triangle high school students are among the winners of Morehead-Cain Scholarships at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The prestigious scholarship pays all expenses for four years of undergraduate study, including the cost of a laptop computer and four summer enrichment experiences. Its value is about $80,000 for each in-state student, and $140,000 for each out-of-state student.

This year, the Morehead-Cain Foundation awarded scholarships to 70 students -- 61 from the United States, three from Great Britain, three from Canada, and one each from Austria, Hong Kong and Turkey. Thirty-three scholarships went to students from North Carolina.

UNC-Greensboro has concluded its five-year capital campaign, taking in $115 million.

That total exceeded the university's goal by more than 15 percent. The Students First Campaign brought in $115,346,891 through gifts and pledges from about 22,000 donors.

Most of that money, about $75 million, will go to the campaign's key initiatives: undergraduate and graduate student scholarships and faculty development.
