Jane Suppa: Parents as teachers

Regarding the Aug. 22 Point of View “ Deserting the idea of the common good” by Leslie Maxwell: This was a very well-written article, and I agree with the opinions stated.

However, there never was addressed one very significant fact: What qualifies every and any parent as a teacher? This is a highly insulting assumption to professional teachers who study for a minimum of four years and most for additional years for advanced degrees. Perhaps we should have “home lawyers, home doctors, home dentists, home therapists, etc.” Silly? Yes, just as silly as “home teachers.”

I am a retired teacher of 32 years and the mother of a teacher in North Carolina. There is much more to it than a list of directions.
