I am a sophomore at Enloe High School. My brother goes to Ligon Middle School. We live in northwest Raleigh. We have not received a bus assignment.
From the WCPSS website we learned that our route and stop were among the 116 routes and 4,000-plus stops canceled. The closest stop is about half a mile from our house. We rode that bus home last week. It takes my brother over two hours to get home.
Recently, I waited 30 minutes for the bus. It makes two stops at other schools before Enloe. When I boarded the bus, the driver confronted me with a list telling me that since my name was not on it, I couldn’t ride. I pointed to my brother’s name. He was on the bus. She told me to get off and to get a pass, then closed the doors and left. My mother had to leave work to get me. She had been trying to reach WCPSS transportation for over a week before school started, receiving no response.
Cutting 116 bus routes while adding more than 3,000 students to the system is too aggressive. The system’s inability to transport students must be addressed. Our attempts to address it ourselves have gone unacknowledged.
