It appears that America will soon be engaged in a limited ground war, using advisers in Iraq and an air campaign in Syria. So begins another open-ended American commitment in men and treasure. Now is the time for all the good patriots pushing the president to war to stand up and ask that he be fiscally responsible and pay for billions we will soon spend.
What conservative will agree to a hefty tax hike to pay for the bombs? What good liberal will accept cuts to eduction or health care to offset the cost? True patriotism comes at a cost.
For those now embracing war, calling on America to “do something,” let’s see whether they are willing to pay the cost. I expect no one will accept the challenge. Instead we will send other people’s children off to war and borrow every dime to do it. Then we can feel good that we put a patriotic bumper sticker on our cars and mouthed platitudes about sacrifice, while making none of our own.
