Regarding the Sept. 8 Point of View “ The bounty beneath North Carolina soil” by David McGowan regarding the benefits of natural gas production:
The article states that fracking supports 2 million jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are about 211,000 workers in the oil and gas extraction industry in the United States.
The article also states that domestic natural gas production has decreased the annual energy bills for American households by $1,200 per year. This is ridiculous. According to the Energy Information Administration, the average winter natural gas bill is about $600. If the cost had decreased $1,200, consumers would be paying nothing for natural gas.
