Regarding your news series “ Contract to Cheat”: Thank you for the excellent reporting exposing the massive cheating being perpetuated by construction firms in this state.
As I read the series, I couldn’t help but think about the many times in the Tillis-Hagan debate last week that House Speaker Thom Tillis kept repeating how bad regulation was for small business. What, because the owners are so honest? Clearly many are not, and we the taxpayers pay the price for his misguided naivete.
What’s so galling is that while Tillis and his ilk are so insistent that business is always honest, they simultaneously presume that a significant share of our poor, our unemployed and our voters must surely be cheating and slap on rule after directive after decree to make their lives here in North Carolina harder and smaller.
Even if the same share of business people and poor/unemployed/voting people were dishonest, it is businesses and corporations that, by far, cost us the most in their deceit. Thank goodness we still have newspapers looking into the taxpayer fraud that our current legislature won’t even try to see.
