Regarding the news series “ Contract to Cheat”: The News & Observer’s new “crusade” on contracted construction workers should be on the comic strip pages. Is it the law and tax code that are being broken when every industry takes advantage of it? It all centers on what it’s called.
Large corporations call them “call centers,” on- and off-shore contract workers we talk to when we have a product or service problem. They don’t work for the computer or service company we think we’re dealing with. Satellite TV installation and “customer service” centers are contracted services. Home product centers that will also install that door or window for us? It is being done by a “contracted” employee. That large corporation (fill in the name) that has one or two “consultants” under long-term contract to do personnel and accounting work? They are contractors.
Come on. It’s our convoluted IRS and state tax codes that breed the problem, if there is a problem.
