The writers of the series “ Contract to Cheat” disregarded one of the basic rules of investigative reporting: to follow the money trail.
Who benefits from the low wages and poor working conditions of the workers they described? Surely it is not the immigrant workers, legal or illegal, nor is it the other workers, black and white, who must also accept low wages and poor conditions, nor is it the small contractors, struggling to survive.
No, it is the big boys who are profiting from this: major home builders – the ones who are setting the prices so low that they know that the work cannot be done unless laws are violated.
“A dead fish stinks from the head,” as the saying goes. Let’s place the blame on those at the top of the chain, not those at the bottom.
