Professor Gene Nichol’s Sept. 14 Point of View “ The people Medicaid could save” was, I thought, eloquently on target. He called out House Speaker Thom Tillis and Gov. Pat McCrory for what they really are, callous, manipulative politicians responsible for the deaths of thousands of low-income people in North Carolina as a result of the governor’s and legislature’s refusal to accept federal Medicaid funds.
Not surprisingly, it appears Nichol is the only UNC faculty member required to write a disclaimer at the end of each of his articles. No other faculty member publishing in The News & Observer writes such a disclaimer. This is patently biased and unfair. Either all UNC faculty should be required to have a disclaimer or none.
After all, a university is supposed to be the epicenter of free speech, and, I assume, that includes the University of North Carolina.
