Regarding the Aug. 19 reprinted editorial “ No question: McCrory mishandled Duke stock”: The Charlotte Observer overlooked one glaring charge in its editorial critique of Gov. Pat McCrory’s response to the Duke Energy stock imbroglio of 2014. (Or was it 2013? Who knows? Apparently not his legal counsel.)
Of equally grave concern stands the governor’s open admission that he was, in truth, actively managing his stock portfolio while also preparing to make decisions with the potential to materially influence the value of Duke stock – which is about as close to insider trading as he could get without actually being on the company’s payroll.
That he would one day come to view his shares in Duke Energy as a liability rather than a safe investment may be a turn of events that genuinely took McCrory by surprise. But his choice to hold them after taking office was no accident. Make no mistake about it.
