Bravo to Dwane Powell for his Sept. 21 cartoon “ Follow the red brick road to tax cuts.”
Legislative staff (N.C. General Assembly Fiscal Research Division, July 24) revised estimates of income tax cuts the General Assembly approved in 2013. State revenues are projected to fall by $680 million in tax year 2014, $890 million in 2015 and $1 billion in 2016. Our legislators and governor worship the false ideology of cutting taxes to increase jobs. But North Carolina job growth is similar to that of Virginia and South Carolina – which did not cut taxes.
Yes, GOP legislators can take credit for the tax revenue shortfall. They can take credit for teachers leaving the state and the negative impact on universities. The next strategy will be “save our way” to a balanced budget. Yes, cut the schools more, cut higher education more.
Do they have the wherewithal to admit their error and reverse the tax cuts? How about increasing taxes on those who can afford to pay? Of course not!
But we can vote. For the good of North Carolina, please vote and remember this fiscal mess!
