Regarding the Sept. 26 Point of View about real tax reform co-authored by Tom Fetzer: Oh, so much to say and so little space!
Yes, our corporate rate is very high compared with other countries, but what the authors neglect to mention is how very few large corporations in this country ever pay that rate, thanks to dozens of loopholes in the tax code. In fact, some large American corporations pay no tax at all!
There’s also the glaring omission of Tom Fetzer’s current career. He and his firm are one of the top-ranked lobbying firms at our state General Assembly. I find it fascinating that he decided not to include that information. I guess he is either ashamed of his current occupation or that his Republican Party has decided to bash a Democratic candidate for his past lobbying activities.
As a retired lobbyist, I have only the greatest respect for the vast majority of for-profit and nonprofit lobbyists who do their jobs with integrity. If there every is any scandal, it typically reflects back to the elected officials involved.
